Irrigation Test

Irrigation Test Procedure

American Backflow Inspectors (ABI) will begin making phone calls prior to the start of the testing program on May 1st for irrigation customers.  Every effort will be made to contact the customer prior to performing the test, however with several thousand devices to be tested it may not be possible to speak with everyone personally.  It is the customer’s responsibility to have their device ready to test by May 1st.  State guidelines require each backflow to be tested EVERY year within a 12 month period.

Initial Test – The initial test will be performed and a copy of the test results will be left at the front door in a plastic bag.  Any failures will be noted on the test form.  If there are failures, it will result in a failed test.

Follow-up Test – If the device fails the initial test, a follow-up test will be scheduled for 14 days following the initial test.  It is the customer’s responsibility to have the device repaired and ready for re-test within the allotted time frame.  There will be an additional charge for each test performed.

After the third failed test ABI will notify the Water District that the device is not in compliance with regulations.  This will result in a discontinuation of water service to this location.  Water service will not be restored until the customer has the device repaired or replaced within the specified time frame. It is common for an irrigation device to fail for no water on the unit.  PLEASE BE SURE that the water is ON up to the number 2 shutoff valve (see diagram).  You do NOT have to start using your irrigation system at the time, but the water must be on up to the number 2 shutoff valve on the backflow device.

If you have any questions regarding the testing program, please call ABI at (615) 366-8983.  We will be happy to answer your questions or concerns.
